Trainer Ray Pullen believes Crayons To Perfume can continue to work her way through the grades when the promising mare lines up at the Ladbrokes Racing Centre Mowbray in Launceston on Sunday afternoon.
The four-year-old daughter of Always B Miki started her career in Victoria before joining the Pullen stable, where she has had two starts, including a win in Hobart on 26 July.
“She’s a lovely mare. She came in 5 in good buckle from Craig Turnbull, and I think she’ll go through classes down here,” said Pullen.
Her Hobart win had some worrying moments when she galloped soon after the start, before quickly regaining her gait to settle behind the leader and improving three-wide from the 300m.
“I don’t know what happened there (at the start). She might have just tried to rush out of the gate a little.”
Crayons To Perfume followed the Hobart win with a second placing in Launceston on 1 August, where she recorded the quickest individual last half-mile on the eight-race card in 55.4s on a program that included the $100,000 Beautide.
“That was a good run. She came from near last.
“She’s trialled (in Hobart) since and trained on well, and I expect her to go well,” said the trainer.
Despite drawing favourably in barrier two with Tiarna Ford in the sulky, Pullen doesn’t believe Crayons To Perfume necessarily needs to lead to produce her best.
“I think she’s a better mare behind, actually. She’s a bit of a stargazer when she’s in front,” he said.
Pullen and Ford will combine earlier in the program with Smooth Reason in the Ladbrokes Next Multi In Next Up Pace (2200m).
She won five starts ago and has mixed her form since.
“Last start she was in season. She’s trained on okay, so if the right one goes to the races, she’s a show,” said Pullen.
Pullen intends to move to South Arm in the not-too-distant future.
He expects to work a small team when he makes the move.
“I won’t work too many, probably half a dozen. That’s all. Just give me something to do.
“They say racing is only curable by death, and I couldn’t sit around doing nothing, ” said Pullen.
Sunday’s Launceston card is another afternoon meeting, starting at 12:30. The meeting will be shown on Tasracing Live, while Sky Racing 1 will televise the first nine races, with the last currently scheduled for Sky Racing 2.
