Gidgegannup horsewoman Kym Shingleton, the lady behind the Five Twenty Equine Breeding banner, has been involved with horses for more than 30 years.

“I was born into a pony stud. My mum Sue and I are among the biggest breeders of Welsh ponies in WA,” Kym said. “We’ve got six stallions at stud.”

Five years ago Kym decided to branch out into the standardbred breeding business.

“We invested into some young, well bred mares and sent them to good stallions,” she said. “We own 14 broodmares at the moment.”

Shingleton is offering five yearlings – three colts and two fillies – at the Australian Pacing Gold Perth Yearling Sale at Magic Millions on Sunday, March 1.

“This is probably my strongest sale and next year should be stronger again with the crop I’ve got on the ground,” she said.

The 2026 sale is the fourth year that Five Twenty Equine has been a vendor at the WA sales. Three of the five yearlings are the first foals of their dams.

The first of Kym’s offering is Lot 305, a neat, compact Downbytheseaside colt out of the Group 3 winning Art Major mare Alta Louisa NZ, a daughter of the dual Group winner Famous Alchemist and thus a close relative of the NZ Superstars 4YO Championship winner Alta Meteor and the Chandon Classic victor Justcallmemiki.

Next is Lot 309, a tall, leggy, bold moving colt by American Ideal from the Dainty’s Daughter Classic and WA Breeders Stakes winner Arma Indie NZ. He’s from the maternal family of the NSW Derby winner and Inter Dominion Final placegetter Excel Stride, the 2YO Filly of the Year Arma Xpress, Xceptional Arma, Arma Einstein, etc.

Shingleton rates the Downbytheseaside filly out of the Group 3 victor Bettors Destroya, Lot 335, as ‘’the standout of my bunch”.

“She’s a nicely put together filly from a great family,” she said.

Bettors Destroya is a sister or half-sister to four $100,000 earners including the Westbred Classic and WA 4YO Championship winner Bettor Reward, the Dainty’s Daughter and The Coulson winner Sovrana and the WA Sales Classic winner Captain Stirling.

Lot 384 is a lovely colt by the siring success Huntsville and the only progeny of the Somebeachsomewhere horse at the WA sales. His dam Glorafilia NZ is a half-sister to five 2:00 performers headed up by the cup winners Costa Del Magnifico and The Musics Over.

The last but certainly not the least of Shingleton’s draft is Lot 391, an impressive The Storm Inside colt out of the Mach Three matron Long Macc.

“He’s probably the strongest colt I’ve ever bred. He moves nicely and has got a lot of presence about him,” Kym stated.
