Cordero does it again

Evergreen nine-year-old pacer Cordero was in the doldrums a fortnight ago when he had a losing sequence of 25, including one second and three third placings.

But Byford owner-trainer Trevor Wright has refreshed the old gelding, who notched his second win in the space of eight days when he charged home from last with 650m to travel, and from ninth at the 100m mark, to get up and snatch victory by a head from $4.20 chance Flyin Disco in the $21,000 Westbred Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night.

Ace driver Deni Roberts used similar tactics as those she employed the previous week --- saving Cordero for a flying finish.

Maddy Lou, the $4 favourite, set the pace, with Douseeme ($16) in the breeze, while Cordero, from out wide at barrier seven, was racing in last position in the field of twelve.

Douseeme took the lead with 500m to travel before Flyin Disco gained the upper hand 250m later and was overhauled in the final stride.

Cordero has now won seven metropolitan-class events, and Friday night’s victory gave Roberts her seventh success with the Western Terror pacer, who boasts a record of 189 starts for 18 wins, 43 placings and $323,611 in prizemoney. He has inherited much of his ability from his dam, the Safely Kept mare Innocent Eyes, who earned $421,875 from 18 wins and 17 placings from 62 starts. Her wins included the Victoria Oaks and Australia Oaks at Moonee Valley in 2005 and the 2006 Chariots Of Fire at Harold Park.
