The Board and Management of Harness Racing New South Wales pass on their deepest condolences to the family and many friends following the sad passing of Ray Mawhood last week.

Ray, aged 87, was based in Oberon and played an instrumental role in harness racing in the Western Districts.

He proudly owned and bred many talented horses throughout the years, including the likes of Smooth Dixie and Saloon Passage to name some.

Ray also served on the Board of the Bathurst Harness Racing Club and was active in establishing the now very successful Gold Crown series.

Acknowledged for devoting 25 years as a director of the BHRC, in 2018 Ray was a dual recipient of Harness Racing Australia’s Meritorious Service Award with his lifelong friend John Brien.

Ray and his late wife Margret also helped fund the Memorabilia Room at the new Bathurst Paceway and sponsored many races in their time.

A stalwart of our sport, Ray will be sadly missed and may he rest in eternal peace.

Funeral details will be shared once they become available.
