The 2025 APG Sydney Yearling Sale has some yearlings with amazing bloodlines offered by individual vendors on February 16. Here, we take a lot at some of the potential sale toppers in the first part of the sale.
Lot 201 (vendor – Seahorse Racing)
The 2025 APG Sydney Yearling Sale could see some fireworks right at the start of the auction when a three-quarter brother in blood to top pacer Catch A Wave comes into the ring as the first lot.
This colt is out of Bettor Copagoodone, a half sister to Catch a Wave (1.48.8, $2M), by the same sire Captaintreacherous.
Bettor Copagoodone (by the all-conquering Bettors Delight) was a smart race mare in WA, winning 11 races and banking $103,000 in stakes. She has a lifetime record of 1.54.5.
Catch A Wave has raced in elite company throughout his career.
He was 2021 Australian 2YO of the year and won the Vicbred final and APG Gold Bullion at three.
As a 4YO, he won the $1M Miracle Mile and the Chariots Of Fire.
He had another sensational season in 2024, winning the $1.2M The Nullarbor, the Fremantle Cup and the Len Smith Mile and more than $800,000 in stakes.
Third dam Copper Beach (1.58.6, $179K) won the NZ and Victoria Oaks and was 2004 NZ 3YO filly of the year. She produced dual Oaks winner De Lovely, who was 2010 NZ 3YO filly of the year.
Lot 206 (vendors - A Glynn, G Saunders, S Lake & M Connor)
This colt is by Interdominion winner Ultimate Machete from Wagga track record holder Florist (1.55.1, $55K), who won 11 races on NSW tracks.
Interestingly, this colt’s sire and dam both trace back to legendary broodmare Rustic Maid on their material line.
The NZ bred Rustic Maid is ancestress of hundreds of winners including Interdominion winner Ultimate Sniper and outstanding sires Chamfer (who sired 1966 Interdominion winner Chamfer Star and Collaborate (damsire of 1990 Interdominion victor Thorate).
Forist is a half sister to tough campaigner The Democrat (1.53.1, $175K), who has won 25 races.
Third dam Polo One produced Edgar Tatlow winner Apollo Greed (1.59.3, $223K) and Australian Oaks placegetter Pretty Inpink (1.56.8, $103K).
Lot 211 (vendor – Ascot Park Standardbreds)
This regally bred filly by Art Major from winning Fake Left mare Go Gretel is from a star-studded filly family and has outstanding residual value as a future broodmare.
Her grandam, Girl In A Million (1.58.5, $83K), was a Group 3 winner and produced 12 winners at stud, including the dam of Group 1 winner and Qld Oaks runner-up Get In The Groove (1.54.5, $242K).
Third dam Goldrush Girl (TT1.55.3, $151K) won the Qld Oaks and was runner-up in the Qld Derby in 1986.
She produced eight winners, including dual Group 1 winner Good Lookin Girl (1.53.7, $361K).
The cross of Art Major over a daughter of Fake Left has been responsible for some of the best fillies in Australia in recent times, including Group 2 winning filly Major Occasion (1.48.2, $604K) and Seymour Nursery Fillies Pace (G1) winner Joys A Babe (1.51.7, $400K).
The dam of Leap To Fame (1.48.8, $3.4M), Lettucereason is also a daughter of Art Major from a Fake Left mare.
Lot 214 (vendor – David Ford)
This colt is by exciting new sire Cattlewash from Art Major mare How Sweet Thou Art, the dam of Junee Cup winner Camanchi Warrior (1.53.1, $181K), who has won 21 races.
Cattlewash has sired 16 winners of more than $1 million in stakes from his first two-year-old crop in the US.
This colt is bred on the same cross as his top American earner Manolete (1.50.8, $219K), who is out of an Art Major mare.
Manolete won multiple Sires Stakes races and the Reynolds Memorial. He is his sire’s fastest performer for 2024.
This colt is from the family of grand circuit campaigner Tiffs Mystery and Group 1 winning 2YO Another Tiff.
Lot 215 (vendor – Jonathon McCalister)
This striking colt is also by Cattlewash from good race mare Ima Grumpy Possom (1.53.6, $124K), who is by Art Official (a son of Art Major).
The NZ bred Ima A Grumpy Possum scored 16 wins and 24 placings on NSW and Queensland tracks. She won three races and took a time of 1.56.8 as a 3YO.
She is a half sister to smart juvenile Sinbad (1.52.3, $168K), who was runner-up in the 2YO NZ Sires Stakes (G1) and third in the NZ Derby (G1) before being exported to the US.
She is also a half sister to quality mare Our American Princess (1.52.3, $111K), who won 11 races in Victoria.
Cattlewash’s first crop of 2Y0s averaged $55,000 per starter in the US last season.
He sired two New Jersey 2YO Sires Stakes final winners – McCusker (1.51.6, $165K) won the $240,000 colts final and Reckless Abandon (1.51.6, $136K) won the $194,000 fillies final. He sired 16 winners from just 38 foals.
This colt is from the family of 2003 NZ 4YO mare of the year Oaxaca Lass (1.55.8, $426K).
Lot 217 (vendor – Thomas Phillips)
This colt is by Bling It On from speedy mare Kelly Major (1.57.6, $10K) and is a half brother to good filly Saint Kilda Beach (1.53.9, $105K), a winner of 15 races – five as a 2YO and 3YO.
Kelly Major is by sensational broodmare sire Art Major, who’s daughters produced 403 winners of more than 1000 races and $13 million in stakes in Australia in 2024.
He is the dam sire of superstar Leap To Fame, dual NZ Cup winner Swayzee, Miracle Mile runner-up Spirit Of St Louis, 2024 ID final placegetter Max Delight and WA Pacing Cup victor Soho Tribeca – who have won more than $10 million in stakes between them.
This colt’s grandam is a full sister to Victoria Cup and Miracle Mile placegetter Hexus (1.50.5, $555K), who won 30 races.
She is also a half sister to the dam of star Tasmanian pacer Magician (1.54.1, $356K) and Stars Align (1.48, $832K), a winner of 10 races as a 3YO and 39 races on US tracks.
