Bulletproof Boy winning the 2025 Newcastle Mile
MUCH has been made of the old marvel Bulletproof Boy racing in career best for as an 11-year-old.
But the old boy is just part of the remarkable angle to Friday night’s $1.25 million Group 1 Nullarbor at Gloucester Park.
The average age of the 10-horse field is 7.5 years old.
That’s a wonderful advertisement for the durability and resilience for the standardbred, especially given many of these horses have been racing at the top level for so long, too.
It is also a huge credit to the trainers behind them.
The two headline acts of the race, local stars Minstrel and Magnificent Storm, are both nine and have battled more than their share of niggles and issues over the years.
Yet here they are at age most others are retired heading the betting for one of the richest races in this part of the world.
Third favourite is the storied NSW veteran Max Delight, who at 10, has raced 160 times and banked over $1.5 million. He won a Victoria Cup about five years ago.
Of course, Bulletproof Boy has raced the most with his 230 starts for 53 wins, 54 placings and $973,266.
Gee he deserves to top the $1 million, which he will do regardless of where he finishes on Friday night.
Then we’ve got another multiple feature race winner in eight-year-old Mighty Ronaldo.
Mick Stanley’s NSW raider Ubetcha Tigerpie is no spring chicken either as a seven-year-old. That’s the same age as Leap To Fame now.
The others are: Hugotastic (six), Justcallmemiki (five), Golden Lode (five) and Franco Motu (five).
