BUZZ French import Kristal Josselyn is ready to rock.
Trainer Anton Golino, the man who plucked him from France for Gold Coast owner Norm Jenkin, the six-year-old was “as good as we can get him” for his first Australian start in a mile free-for-all at Newcastle tomorrow night.
It’s a forerunner to the $100,000 Group 1 Hammerhead Mile at Menangle on March 14.
“Luke (McCarthy, driver) said his last trial was his best and we agreed it was time to go to the races with him,” Golino said.
“He’s been running out a bit in his trials, but I’ve changed a few things and Luke said he’ll handle Newcastle, so we’ve picked this race.
“We’re still learning about him, so this is just a starting point, but I’m expecting a good run.
“What’s clear is that he’s got a big motor, a huge motor.
“He gave me a great feel when I worked him yesterday (Wednesday) and that’s a great sign ahead of this race.
“He’s settled in, has those trials under his belt and is working like a good horse.
“There’s only so much you can do at home and at the trials, it’s time to race him and learn more now.”
That doesn’t mean Golino expects to just turn up and win.
“It won’t be a walk in the park with Sunset Hill and Watts Up Partytime there,” he said. “It’ll be great to see where he lines up and what we learn from this week.”
Kristal Josselyn won six races and over $500,000 in France, including two Group 2 wins.
Golino has spent time working in France and his connections helped identify Kristal Josselyn and a suitable prospect when Jenkin said he was in the hunt for a French trotter.
In his previous role with Yabby Dams, Golino trained the outstanding French import Callmethebreeze to beat Just Believe in the Great Southern Star two years ago.
Callmethebreeze then ran second to Just Believe in the TAB Trot at Cambridge.
That’s the race Kristal Josselyn is being set for at Cambridge on April 10.
