Mildura, Friday 18 July

Form Analysis by Craig Rail

Race 1:

OVERVIEW: DARK SANDS (6) is a fast beginner and races best when he is able to lead. He led and finished third behind Stonebridge Star at Mildura two weeks ago and he gets his chance to break through for a win here. BILUM (4) has been safely held at her most recent performances but she did have excuses at Mildura last time out and she defeated a slightly stronger field when successful on May 23. She should run an improved race under these conditions. VILLAGE LOVER (5) was resuming since May when a close up fourth in the race won by Stonebridge Star two weeks ago. He should be fitter from that run and is not without a chance. AUCKLAND LASS (1) is worth thought in multiple combinations from the pole position.

EARLY SPEED: 6 (likely leader), 3,4,5

SELECTIONS: DARK SANDS (6), BILUM (4), VILLAGE LOVER (5), AUCKLAND LASS (1)

RATINGS: 6/ 4,5/ 1/ 7

SUGGESTED BET: DARK SANDS (6) to win

Race 2:

OVERVIEW: KEAYANG CRIPPA (8) finished off well when second behind Stonebridge Star two weeks ago then endured a tough run and had excuses at his latest sixth. He strikes a suitable assignment now and gets his chance to return to winning form. GLENLEA HANOVER (6) is a good chance of following her stablemate ROBERT CROCKA (5) across the face of the field and finding the lead shortly after the start. She adopted the same tactic and ran a reasonable race for fourth in a stronger field last week so she is not without a chance. ROBERT CROCKA (5) has won a lot of races from behind the leader and his brilliant gate speed is a key asset. He had his chance in the same race as GLENLEA HANOVER (6) last week but he might find this assignment to be a little easier. STONEBRIDGE STAR (7) is likely to settle in a rearward position from his awkward draw but he should be hitting the line strongly.

EARLY SPEED: 5 (likely early leader), 3,6

SELECTIONS: KEAYANG CRIPPA (8), GLENLEA HANOVER (6), ROBERT CROCKA (5), STONEBRIDGE STAR (7)

RATINGS: 8/ 6/ 5,7/ 1,2

SUGGESTED BET: KEAYANG CRIPPA (8) each way

Race 3:

OVERVIEW: PRIORITISE (7) is resuming since a fourth at Globe Derby in May and he hasn’t been to the trials but he is the class runner of the field. He finished fifth in the Mildura Cup during his last preparation. LE SPARTACUS (5) continues to impress and should run his usual honest race. He kept on fighting and overcame adversity to win (dead-heat) under similar conditions at Mildura last week. CAULONIA TERROR (4) is racing well but without luck and should be hitting the line strongly. He only just failed to overhaul the leaders when a close third in a thrilling finish last week. EYE SEE PHILTRA (2) had little luck in the home straight last week and has claims along with IM BLINGIN IT (6).

EARLY SPEED: 1 (likely early leader), 3,6

SELECTIONS: PRIORITISE (7), LE SPARTACUS (5), CAULONIA TERROR (4), IM BLINGIN IT (6)

RATINGS:7/ 5/ 4,6/ 2,8/ 1/ 3

SUGGESTED BET: PRIORITISE (7) to win

Race 4:

OVERVIEW: CEMETERY BAY (8) finished off best to score over a similar field at Mildura last week. He has the advantage of race fitness over his main rival JAXON BEACH (3) so he must be considered as a winning chance again. JAXON BEACH (3) is resuming since a ninth in a heat of the Mildura Cup in April and hasn’t been to the trials. He possesses gate speed and he has won six races at Mildura previously so he will take catching if he is somewhere near his peak form. RIO ROCK (5) has had a terrible run with the barrier draw and is racing better than her form reads. The move to the front line is an advantage and she cannot be underestimated. MY ULTIMATE LEVI (4) is drawn to give another forward showing and KEAYANG MOROCCAN (7) is racing in peak form.

EARLY SPEED: 3 (possible leader), 1,2,5,6

SELECTIONS: CEMETERY BAY (8), JAXON BEACH (3), RIO ROCK (5), MY ULTIMATE LEVI (4)

RATINGS: 3,8/ 4,5/ 7/ 6

SUGGESTED BET: CEMETERY BAY (8) each way

Race 5:

OVERVIEW: SIR VINCENT (6) is poorly drawn for his first start since March but he was an impressive trial winner at Maryborough last week and he strikes a suitable assignment first up. FLYIN TOMMY (9) endured a wide trip and battled on well for fourth at Mildura last week. He was placed three times in succession under similar conditions at Mildura in June and he gets his chance to post his maiden Mildura success here. MARIAHS SHADOW (8) hasn’t performed up to expectations at her past three starts but she was in sparkling form prior having won six races for the season so she is worth another chance. LORD VERDE (4) possesses early speed and is a winning chance if he can get across to the markers shortly after the start.

EARLY SPEED: 4 (possible leader), 6

SELECTIONS: SIR VINCENT (6), FLYIN TOMMY (9), MARIAHS SHADOW (8), LORD VERDE (4)

RATINGS: 6,9/ 4,8/ 1

SUGGESTED BET: SIR VINCENT (6) to win

Race 6:

OVERVIEW: A ROCKNROLL JET (3) is yet to win in nineteen starts for the season but he appears to be well graded against this line up. He was placed twice in succession at Mildura then was confidently supported but had little luck from a wide draw against stronger opposition at Charlton. CALF PEN (4) recorded a slick mile rate of 1.57.6 when he scored at Mildura on June 20 and his past two efforts were in a strong heat and final series at Mildura so he should be hard to hold out in the run to the finish. HOOKLINEANDSINKER (2) makes his Mildura debut for trainer Naomi Kerr. He was a winner at Bendigo last season and all of his three runs this term have been against handy opposition at Wagga. He gains a good draw first up in the Sunraysia so he must be kept safe. ANGELS WATCHING (7) and THEBUCKSONYOU (8) both have claims in an open race.

EARLY SPEED: 2 (possible leader), 1,5

SELECTIONS: A ROCKNROLL JET (3), CALF PEN (4), HOOKLINEANDSINKER (2), ANGELS WATCHING (7)

RATINGS: 3,4/ 2/ 7,8/ 1,5/ FIELD

SUGGESTED BET: A ROCKNROLL JET (3) each way

Race 7:

OVERVIEW: FLAME BLASTER (7) has finished off boldly at his past two attempts and he is drawn behind the likely leader WATCHTHECLOCK (1) so he looms as a value chance again. HESASTAR (4) is a strong type and finished second behind Red Hot Miki (won again since) after racing without cover throughout at Mildura two starts ago. He is drawn to give another forward showing under these conditions. WATCHTHECLOCK (1) disappointed at Mildura last week but he performs best when he is able to lead so the move to the front line is a definite advantage. AVOCA BLUES (5) is stepping up in class but he is a fast beginner and is racing in peak form so he is worth thought again.

EARLY SPEED: 1 (likely leader), 2,4,5

SELECTIONS: FLAME BLASTER (7), HESASTAR (4), WATCHTHECLOCK (1), AVOCA BLUES (5)

RATINGS: 7/ 4/ 1,5/ 6,10/ FIELD

SUGGESTED BET: FLAME BLASTER (7) each way

Race 8:

OVERVIEW: POTTSY THE GURU (3) has had a few gait issues to commence his career but he is working into form having been placed in three of his past four starts. He was an impressive trial winner at Mildura last week and will take beating if he is able to put together a fool proof display. LORD MYRMECIA (2) attempted to lead throughout when second behind Angels Watching at Mildura two starts ago. He has been runner up in four of his six Mildura starts to date and is drawn to find the lead again so he must be respected. JUST JIMMY (1) is a South Australian trained juvenile, which finished second at Port Pirie last outing. He is drawn to receive every chance from the pole position and has claims at his Mildura debut. SHEEZ SLASHING (6) ran a nice race at her first attempt for trainer Malcolm Retallick and is worth thought despite the poor draw.

EARLY SPEED: 2 (likely leader), 5

SELECTIONS: POTTSY THE GURU (3), LORD MYRMECIA (2), JUST JIMMY (1), SHEEZ SLASHING (6)

RATINGS: 2,3/ 1,6/ 5,8

SUGGESTED BET: POTTSY THE GURU (3) each way

Race 9:

OVERVIEW: PUNTO CALIENTE (1) made up a lot of ground when an eye-catching fourth at Mildura then followed with a win in a heat of this series. He is a good chance of ending up being behind the leader from the pole position and should run another big race. SPRING DELIGHT (2) produced a dominant front running display when he raced well clear of his rivals to win last week. He is draw to lead again and should take catching. CRUZ WITH ROME (7) is the form runner of the race with two victories followed by a brave second ($1-80 fav) last week. He is very awkwardly positioned on the inside of the second line but will take beating if he gains some luck in running. ORAMA (5) and AMERICAN BOXER (12) were both heat winners last week and are worth thought but both are drawn awkwardly.

EARLY SPEED: 2 (likely leader), 5,6

SELECTIONS: PUNTO CALIENTE (1), SPRING DELIGHT (2), CRUZ WITH ROME (7), ORAMA (5)

RATINGS: 1/ 2,7/ 5/ 3,6,12/ 10

SUGGESTED BET: PUNTO CALIENTE (1) each way
