Lot 263 - Sire: Bettors Delight USA | Dam: Bainfeild Washington NZ
Goulburn breeding guru Matt Day has the right formula for bringing out top class racehorses, particularly two and three-year-olds.
Day, who has been a vendor with Australian Pacing Gold since its inception in 1989, bred the winners of last year’s APG Gold Bullion 2YO Finals in Loucasso (Melbourne – colt) and Bettor’s Creation (Sydney – filly).
Loucasso won seven of his nine starts and a season’s high prizemoney of $400,204 and looks a monty for the Australian 2YO Pacing Colt of the Year award, while Bettor’s Creation was undefeated in two attempts.
Sicario, the winner of four Group races and $590,000, Australia’s first sub 1:50 three-year-old filly Anntonia, the 2022 APG Sydney Gold Bullion victor Captain Ritchie and the NSW Breeders Challenge winners Soho Almasi and Miss Halfpenny are others among a swag of top performers that were bred and raised at Day’s Southern Tablelands’ property.
Will Day’s three-strong entry at the APG Sydney Yearling Sale at Warwick Farm on Sunday, March 15 unearth a fourth winner of the coveted $100,000 sales-race series?
The headline act of the ‘Class of 2026’ is likely to be Lot 263, a brown/black filly by the siring colossus Bettor’s Delight and one of only two fillies by the great one at the Sydney auction.
Bainfeild Washington NZ, the dam of the filly, won 20 races including a heat of the NSW Oaks and $197,000 and took a mile mark of 1:51.8 and at the stud has a 100 percent record with four foals for four winners – all inside 2:00. They include the Menangle and Albion Park winner Speedy Dominic, who later took a record of 1:49.4 in North America and has a bankroll of $428,000.
“She’s a great mover and has got a good disposition. She’s true to Bettor’s Delight,” Day stated.
The Day draft is anchored by two colts by the exciting, young Captaintreacherous horse Captain Crunch, whose first two ‘down under’ crops have produced the classic winners Captain Stirling, Runkle Crunch, Degarmea Teale, Its Maa Time, Sebastian James and others.
Lot 201, a colt out of the Group 3 WA Mares’ Mile winner Im Elsa, ranks as a half-brother to the recent 1:54 Menangle three-year-old winner Elly Lou. Furthermore, Im Elsa is a half-sister to the NZ Sires’ Stakes 3YO Championship winner Democrat Party, the dam of the newly crowned NZ Horse of the Year and dual Auckland Cup hero Republican Party ($1.2million).
“I just can’t fault him. He’s an impressive looking colt who just loves doing his work,” Day said.
The second Captain Crunch is Lot 229, a colt out of the Art Major mare Our Gold Dust Woman NZ, a half-sister to five sub 2:00 winners and to the grand-dam of the three-time Horse of the Year and Miracle Mile winner King Of Swing.
“He’s a good moving colt who really enjoys his work,” Matt said.
