It is the last chance to qualify for next weekend’s $30,000 Fehlbergs Produce Sweepstakes Finals, with the final heats of the fillies, and the colts and geldings divisions to be held in Hobart on Friday night.
South Australian trainer Peter Bain has brought two horses down for the series, Ravishing Ruby for the fillies heat, and B T Captivate for the colts and geldings series.
Both horses were purchased from the NZB National Yearling Sale last year.
“We paid up for four fillies and four colts (for the Sweepstakes) and then narrowed it down to these two.
“They both are progressive, talented young horses that were paid up for the Sweepstakes as a kick-off point, as they were both New Zealand purchases with limited futurities options in Australia, and we flew them over to Australia and put them through our system,” said Aaron Bain, one of many part-owners of both pacers.
“If they measure up, they may fly back to New Zealand for the Sires’ over there, but they have to measure up and kick off on the right note over here first.
Always B Miki filly, Ravishing Ruby, will be on debut in the filly’s heat, having won two of her three trials at Gawler earlier in the year.
“She has got a turn of foot on her and has been one of the better fillies of the 22 we bought. She worked up with the likes of Loucasso and Degarmea Teale and a few of them, and she should be able to measure up,” said Bain.
B T Captivate has drawn outside of the front row in the Colts and Geldings heat, and has been placed in one of two Gawler trial efforts.
“He hasn’t got any luck with the barrier draw, but as we saw in the Protostar, seven is not always a bad thing. You can avoid trouble early.
“He is an imposing colt. He is a big boy that has got plenty of bottom to him,” said Bain about the Captaintreacherous colt who is a half-relation to Group 1 placegetters Sugar Street and Culpeka.
Mark Yole has been booked to drive both pacers.
The fillies heat kicks off the program at 17:12.
