Gidgegannup breeder Kym Shingleton has made a big investment in standardbred broodmares in recent years and she continues to strengthen her band with high quality WA race mares.
“I have expanded my broodmare herd significantly in the past 18 months with the purchase of some outstanding WA mares that have retired from the track - Arma Indie (1.54.7, $179K), Alta Louisa (1.57, $79K), Bettors Destroya (1.56.2, $79K), Precocious Lady (1.57, $69K) and Glorafilia (1.58.4, $27K).
“I have also purchased the Courage Under Fire NZ mare, Seismic (1.57.6, $21K), from Celestial Standardbreds in NSW.
“Her dam line is very strong with her dam, Scoots Away, producing 12 foals for 12 starters, including the Safely Kept filly Self Denial (1.57.6, $446K).
“Scoots Away is a half sister to Full Pleasure who produced Vincent’s dam.
“I have also added to the herd with Capture the Flame, a mare by Vincent who was purchased at the 2021 APG sale as a foundation mare for me, being out of the Elsu mare Auctioneer’s Elsu.
“Sadly, she retired from a promising career with an injury.”
Shingleton has bred and competed Welsh ponies her whole life. It has given her a lifetime of knowledge on foaling and nutrition for young horses.
Her husband, Brett Davis, was interested in harness racing and the couple started out breeding a couple of pacers to race.
“But I decided if we were going to do it, we should breed to sell commercially,” Shingleton said.
She now has 11 broodmares and will offer three yearlings in the 2025 APG Perth Yearling Sale on March 2. She sells them under the Five Twenty Equine banner
Five Twenty have two yearlings of the first four yearlings to go through the ring in Perth.
The first lot of the sale, Lot 301, is a colt by Captain Crunch from Bettors Delight mare Verdello.
Shingleton’s next offering will be Lot 304, a filly by super sire American Ideal from superbly bred young mare Helgart, who come from the family of 2011 Australian 3YO colt of the year pacer Sushi Sushi (1.54.1, $1.1M).
Her fourth dam, Sabilize (1.55.7, $355K), was runner-up in the Miracle Mile. She is by No Nukes.
Her third yearling, Lot 388, is a filly by American Ideal from Alta Louisa.
This filly’s grandam Famous Alchemist (1.53, $322K) was an outstanding race mare, who has already produced Group 2 winner Alta Meteor (1.55, $233K).
“This year, I have three yearlings in the sale and five foals on the ground, with six foals due this coming season,” she said.
“(The 2025 sale standouts are) the two American Ideal fillies out of Art Major mares. One is a first foal for Alta Louisa and the other a second foal for Helgart.
“They are both lovely types and good movers. Alta Louisa was a very successful WA mare so her filly should be of interest to the WA buyers.
“The Helgart filly is the biggest and strongest filly I have produced. She oozes star quality.”
The cross of American Ideal over Art Major mares has produced 66 winners in Australia, including millionaire racehorse and emerging sire Soho Tribeca and tough WA race mare Simply Shaz ($255K).
