Industry Notice – Sulky Maintenance

Harness Racing Australia reminds participants that Australian Harness Racing Rule (AHRR) 273(2) applies to the condition and maintenance of all gear and equipment, including sulkies.

Under AHRR 273(2), a person must not present to start, or start, a horse in a race in gear that, in the opinion of the Stewards, is:

(a) incorrectly fitted;

(b) insecure;

(c) of inadequate quality;

(d) in poor condition; or

(e) of insufficient strength or quality to withstand the stresses likely to be imposed during a race.

Participants must follow any maintenance instructions provided by the sulky manufacturer. However as general guidance, participants should:

  • Regularly inspect frames, shafts and wheels before trackwork or racing for cracks, rust, wear or structural fatigue.
  • Do not use any sulky showing signs of damage until it has been inspected and, if required, repaired by a qualified person.
  • After washing, ensure the sulky is thoroughly dried and any trapped water is drained promptly, as hidden internal rust can contribute to failure.
  • Exercise caution when purchasing second-hand sulkies, particularly where their history is unknown, as prior incidents or repeated sandblasting and repainting may affect structural integrity over time.
  • Use only approved sulky models listed on the relevant official approved gear list.
  • Ensure all required safety gear, including helmets, vests and footwear, is correctly fitted and compliant when handling a horse in a sulky.

Questions about this rule or sulky maintenance should be directed to your sulky manufacturer or the Stewards’ department of the relevant state controlling body.
