Harness Racing Victoria’s Vicbred program will strengthen its support of Victorian breeding and ownership, with changes taking effect from 1 July and 1 January.
The state’s breeding and racing incentive scheme provides significant returns across first‑win bonuses, futurity racing and associated initiatives, encouraging investment in local mares and stallions.
As outlined this month, the program will evolve from 1 January 2027 to better target incentives toward younger horses and Victorian breeding.
From 1 January 2027:
- 2 & 3YO Vicbred Platinum/Pure: $8,000 (+$1,000)
- 4YO Vicbred Platinum/Pure: $6,000 (+$1,000)
- 5YO+ Vicbred Platinum/Pure: $0 (‑$2,500)
- 2 & 3YO Vicbred: $5,000 (‑$2,000)
- 4YO Vicbred: $4,000 (‑$1,000)
- 5YO Vicbred: $0 (‑$2,500)
As part of these changes, the following updates will apply from 1 July:
- The threshold for a restricted race will now increase from $4,500 to 5,000.
- The minimum prizemoney threshold to receive the full Vicbred first‑win bonus will increase to $5,001 (from $4,500)
- South Australian and Tasmanian‑bred foals by non‑Victorian stallions will no longer be eligible for Vicbred. Foals conceived prior to 1 July will remain eligible under existing arrangements
These updates align Vicbred settings with the program’s focus on supporting Victorian breeding activity.
