The USA 2YO Pacing Colt of the Year in 2018, a world champion and the winner of $1.72 million in stakes, Captain Crunch is without question one of the best colt pacers ever to become available to ‘down under’ breeders.

Racing only at two and three, Captain Crunch won 12 of his 26 starts including the North America Cup in a Canadian record 1:47.4, the Breeders Crown 2YO Final, Governor’s Cup and Cane Pace and retired the richest stallion son of the great Captaintreacherous.

He is now matching his greatness as a racehorse in the siring field - in both hemispheres.

He was the leading first crop two-year-old sire in NZ and the third leading first season sire in Australia in 2024 and the premier first season sire in America in 2023.

From his first Australian crop he sired a top colt in Captain Stirling, winner of the WA Sales Classic and one of the star three-year-olds of his season, and a smart filly in Its Maa Time, who won the WA 3YO Sales Classic, the Westbred Classic and WA Country Oaks.

The WA Derby winner Runkle Crunch, Sebastian James (WA Pearl), Captainshavtime, Golden Shooz (Vic. Oaks heat) and Neverbe Without You have been other notable winners by Captain Crunch from his first crops in Australia and NZ.

While his second Aussie crop has produced horses the calibre of the Vicbred 2YO champion Soho Trump, the APG Gold Bullion victor Degarmea Teale, Hilltop Blossom (SA Southern Cross 2YO), Steam Machine (SA Southern Stars) and Eun Sogno, who ran second in the $200,000 NZ Harness Million.

In all, Captain Crunch has left 73 individual winners from 106 Australian bred starters for $2.1 million in stakes.

The Captain Crunch progeny have been eagerly sought after at the Australasian yearling sales with seven sale toppers, eight $100,000 plus yearlings and a $220,000 colt at the 2023 Auckland auction.

In North America, Captain Crunch is the sire of the winners of $US9.3 million with 10 in the 1:50 list and 19 $100,000 earners including the Breeders Crown 2YO champion Gem Quality.

Captain Crunch is represented by six yearlings – three colts and three fillies – at the Australian Pacing Gold Queensland sale at Ipswich Turf Club on Sunday, February 8. They are:

  • Lot 1 – a half-sister to the 2YO and 3YO Filly of the Year Pectacular and the Bathurst Gold Chalice winner Idyllic
  • Lot 3 – a three-quarter sister to the $120,000 earner Spirit King and closely related to the mighty Lazarus
  • Lot 7 – second foal of a Bettor’s Delight half-sister to three $100,000 earners including the QBred Triad 2YO winner Jiggle And Jive
