Lot 97 Almihata
NSW Southern Tablelands horsewoman Anne Walshaw is keeping alive a family association with harness racing that spans almost eight decades.
Based at Parkesbourne, near Goulburn, Anne has been an active participant in the sport for most of her life, enjoying success as a trainer, driver, owner, breeder and yearling sale vendor.
“My father Louis Walshaw and grandfather Cecil were both involved in trotting,” Anne said.
Anne is currently breeding from a trio of exceptionally bred broodmares, two of which have been nominated for the Australian Pacing Gold online Winter Mix Sale from August 15 to 17.
The pair are the Somebeachsomewhere mare Almihata (Lot 97) and the Modern Art daughter More Than Alright (Lot 106).
Almihata, a winner herself, ranks as the dam of the dual Albion Park winner Miss Hattie and the eight-time Victorian winner Nothing Sweeter and is a sister-in-blood to the Victoria Derby heat and Shakamaker Classic winner Motor Smoker.
Furthermore, she belongs to the same family as the ‘black type’ performers Captain Ravishing, Louvre, Miss Hazel, Renaissance Man, Promiseland, My General Lee and Gumdrops.
More Than Alright, the winner of seven races and a Victoria Oaks finalist, has left two winners from only three foals of racing age. They are Lethal Louie, who captured the SA Sires Produce as a three-year-old and has won twice at Albion Park this season, and Give Us A Wink, a winner of nine.
Boasting an all-American breeding background, More Than Alright is a half-sister to five 2:00 winners including the Bathurst Gold Bracelet and Victoria Youthful Stakes victor Vista Bella.
Both mares are empty.
Anne is also offering two of Almihata’s offspring, one a yearling gelding by the Inter Dominion champion Ultimate Sniper (Lot 17) and the other an unbroken three-year-old by emerging young sire Captain Crunch (Lot 28).
Victorian businessman and prominent harness owner Domenic Martello, whose horses carry the ‘Hammer’ moniker, has a single entry in the sale. It is Lot 43, American Hammer, a six-year-old American Ideal gelding who has won nine races including two at Menangle this year highlighted by a 1:52 effort in April.
The winner of $75,682, American Hammer is assessed as NR73.
The Cobbitty based Xerri family, trading as Sloy’s Company, has been synonymous with Group 1 success in harness racing for more than 30 years. Their list of credits include Captain Ravishing, Vincent, Kept For Pleasure, Miss Hazel, Mister Brazil, Louvre, My General Lee, and so on.
The Xerri’s are offering the young, well bred Artspeak mare Australiana as Lot 53 at the APG Winter Mix Sale. A Bathurst Gold Tiara finalist, Australiana, a half-sister to five sub 2:00 winners, is being sold with a positive test to the 2YO Colt of the Year and Breeders Crown champion Be Happy Mach.
Her first foal is a weanling colt by the Captaintreacherous horse Capt Midnight.
