Laid Back Kenny did something many horses haven’t been able to at the last Burnie meeting, win a mobile start race from barrier five on the second line, and he will be looking to do the same again on Friday night when racing returns to Burnie.
Over the past 23 years, this writer couldn’t find a horse that had won from that draw.
Driver Kayleb Williams acknowledged that even though he thought in the run that it would be hard to win at the 27 October effort, he explained how things planned out after a fast lead time was recorded.
“I knew he had the speed late (to figure), but I thought we were just too far back, but there was a few tiring runners on the inside, and I was able to get a cart up and get around them and it just panned out really well,” said Williams
Since his Burnie win, the Geoff Smith-trained pacer finished seventh in a Trainers Encouragement race in Launceston on Sunday.
“Last start in Launceston, he was a little bit disappointing where he over raced a bit, which I think took its toll late.
“It was a quality field for a Trainers Encouragement race, and he has hadn’t been racing those better-rated horses as he had only been racing the up to 50 (rated) horses, so he drops in grade on last week and is back to a similar field to what he won against,” said the driver.
In Friday’s race, Williams is expecting another forward showing.
“It’s another tricky gate, and if he gets the right run into the race, I think he will be close again,” he said.
Friday’s Burnie card commences at 17:07 and can be seen live on Sky Racing 2, plus either in live or replay form between the thoroughbred live stream of the Launceston gallops.
