Gary and Louise Toulmin have been breeding and consigning yearlings to sales around Australia for most of this century. So when they declare that a colt is among the nicest horses they have ever bred, then buyers should be taking notice.
The colt in question is Lot 162 at the Australian Pacing Gold sale in Melbourne on February 15. He is sired by the freakish Soho Lanikai from the Art Major mare Amity’s Girl.
The Toulmin’s purchased Amity’s Girl as a broodmare at an auction in Shepparton some seven years ago. She descends from a South Australian family that both Alan Galloway Snr and Jnr have had immense success with over the years.
Stars such as Bag Limit, Armchair Ride, Yarracoola, Come On Frank and more recently Loucasso all belong to this family.
Soho Lanikai may sneak under the radar of many owners and trainers, but there is no reason why he cannot be a very successful stallion. His breeding is impeccable being a son of the great Somebeachsomewhere, while his dam, the American Ideal mare Obahma Joy, won $180,000 on the racetrack.
Soho Lanikai made his debut as an early two-year-old on February 8, 2020 in the Premiere Stakes at Melton and what a debut it was. After sitting parked for most of the journey, the driver shook the reins at the 400 and Lanikai put 65 metres on his rivals in a twinkling - rating 1:54. Sadly, it was his one and only race start as a fibrillating problem over the next two seasons dismissed his return to the racetrack.
Lanikai then retired to stud duties and from the first small crop of just 12 foals (three-year-olds in 2025), he has sired six winners including the smart youngster Captain Moore 1:50.6, who is now racing very successfully in USA and has banked $112,479 to date.
With that in mind Lot 162 is well worth a close inspection. There are only 36 pacing colts in the Melbourne sale that are eligible for the APG Victorian 2YO Final worth $100,000 in 2027. As such these are incredible odds of competing for that money if you purchase the right colt.
The colt’s sire was a freakish two-year-old and there are some champion two-year-olds in his pedigree. Sounds like a recipe for success!
