TO South Australia via Tasmania is certainly the long way around for Victorian youngster Coniston, but that’s no concern according to trainer John Tormey.

With the three-year-old finalising a successful campaign on the Apple Isle last month, Tormey has decided to head in the opposite direction this time.

As such Coniston will contest a South Australia Derby heat at Globe Derby on Saturday night.

“He thrived in Tasmania,” Tormey said. “He was a handy two-year-old here, still quite green, but I always knew he was smart enough.

“Over there he really came on a racehorse, and although he’s still learning, he is a lot more focused.

“He was one of 10 horses I sent over to Tasmania for a couple of months because prizemoney was a better option.

“In the end, he won nearly 40 grand from five wins and a second, so it was well worth it.

“I gave him a freshen-up after he got home and now he’s off to Adelaide.”

Coniston is engaged in the second qualifier in which he has drawn to settle forward from barrier two.

To be driven by Jack Laugher, the son of Stay Hungry is the second favourite in early markets  behind fellow Victorian raider, Silver Pistol.

A member of the powerful Emma Stewart stable, Silver Pistol will begin from gate six.

“He is feeling terrific and is ready to go,” Tormey said. “Obviously Emma’s horse is the one to beat, but we’ll be doing our best.”

Tormey also has Letsrockletsroll in the opening South Australia Cup heat, with the son of Rock N Roll Heaven drawn the inside of the second row.

“He’s pretty much in as a travelling companion for Coniston, but we still expect a good showing from him,” Tormey said. “It’s a good draw for him as he is only a sit and sprinter.

“With the right run, he will get home well enough.”
