When perusing quality genes and Group One-winning progeny at Dr Ed Dewar’s Estate Sale from Friday May 2, until Sunday May 4, 2025, buyers could look no further than Lot 6, Wedu Whitby Voodoo.
This stunning mare by A Betting Line and out of Terrifying (Western Terror), was born on October 13, 2018, is currently in foal to Pebble Beach and has bloodlines to rival the best of them.
Wedu Whitby Voodoo’s older half-sister (by one year) – the now retired 2017 Mach Three mare, Benesari Lane (1:57.5) won the Group One $150,000 Western Australia Oaks in April 2021, and the year prior she placed in the Group One $100,000 2yo Fillies Classic Final.
All-up Benesari Lane won five of her 31 starts ($143,934). Benesari Lane and Wedu Whitby Voodoo are the first two of three foals so far out of the 2005 Western Terror - Whitbys Rhapsodie (by Astreos) mare, Terrifying (1:55.3) – who won 19 of her 104 starts and placed in 16 others for $131,200 in purses.
The third is a full 2019 brother to Wedu Whitby Voodoo, and his name is Rising Spirit (2:01.1). That brown gelding has so far won seven of his 60 starts and placed in seven others for $48,521. His last win came at Busselton on Boxing Day for Western Australia trainer, and co-owner, Matthew Scott.
Forty-seven-year-old Scott, who trains out of Serpentine, and boasts 607 career wins ($5,694,153), said he recently sold Rising Spirit, but was delighted that he did win seven races for him and just over $45,000.
“I sold him three months ago and he’s having his second start for his new owners and Kellerberrin trainer, Peter Arthur at the Central Wheatbelt meeting on Sunday (April 13). I wish them all the best,” Scott said.
Arthur said he thought Rising Spirit still thought the 5-year-old had quite a bit of potential, despite Scott thinking he might have reached his mark.
“I’m 200km east of Perth. I’m hopeful because Betting Line’s do get better with age. He was in a stable environment with Matthew, and now he roams freely around a three-acre paddock with us, which I think suits him. He can certainly go alright, but the next few weeks will reveal all. He’s won seven races, so he’s no mug,” Arthur said.
“I was quite happy with his first-up fourth at Northam the other day (April 5),” he added.
Meanwhile, the late Terrifying is first and most successful of the three foals left by the one-win 2002 black mare, Whitby’s Rhapsodie. Her grand-dam, the 1987 Holmes Hanover - Tempest Tiger (Tiger Wave) mare, Tempting Franco, was a half-sister to the 1992 Miracle Mile winner – the Glen Tippet-trained and Brian Gath-driven Franco Tiger (1:53.9).
Franco Tiger (13-4 odds), a 1985 son of Bo Scots Blue Chip, led throughout at Moonee Valley to win the ‘Mile’ by two-and-a-half metres from Christopher Vance (3-1), with Jack Morris (8-1) third. All-up the bay gelding won 43 of his 116 starts and placed in 36 others for $991,387 in stakes.
He also nailed the 1992 Queensland Championship, the 1992 Australian Pacing Championship, and the 1993 Truer Memorial, and ran second to Westburn Grant in the 1992 Inter Dominion Grand Final.
Franco Tiger was also voted 1993 Victorian-Horse-of-the-Year. Fifteen of her 43 victories came at Moonee Valley.
In human terms Franco Tiger is Wedu Whitby Voodoo’s Great Uncle - five times removed.
Franco’s Tiger’s mother, the 1975 Tiger Wave mare, Tempest Tiger (1:58.5), only raced 12 times for seven wins and three placings ($28,725), but Franco Tiger aside, she did leave a couple of other nice foals as well.
These included foal number seven (of 10), the 1991 OK Bye gelding, OK Tiger 1:56.4), who was victorious 12 times from 52 starts ($142,866) including the 1998 Queensland Winter Cup. Franco Tiger's full-brother, the 1994 bay gelding, Franco Timor (1:56.8), was also a useful pacer winning 11 of his 27 starts and $70,643.
For the record Wedu Whitby Voodoo's great-grand-dam, the 1996 Northern Lights - Tempting Franco (Holmes Hanover) mare, Typhoon Whitby (1:59.7), did leave a nice Mach Three bay gelding in 2004.
His name was Bronzwhaler Whitby, and he was the fourth of Typhoon Whitby's seven foals and was a younger half-brother to Whitbys Rhapsodie.
Bronzwhaler Whitby (1:55.6) raced in Western Australia from November 2006 until June 2012 and won 19 of his 71 starts. He also placed 16 times and netted $135,652 in purses.
