Smaltese won a trial impressively on the weekend in preparation for his Breeders Challenge heat today at Menangle.

Juvenile pacer Smaltese will have his last chance of qualifying for the Breeders Challenge when he faces a heat at Menangle today.

The colt attempted to earn a spot in the $20,000 semi final on October 16 in a heat at Penrith last Thursday week and blew all chances when galloping twice in running.

Subsequently, Smaltese was stood down until completing a satisfactory trial, which he did at Menangle last Saturday night where he run faster than the Australasian two-year-old record.

Smaltese clocked 1:50.2 seconds in the official hit-out.

On his best behaviour today, he will face talented Queensland pacer Leap To Fame who has won his last four starts.

The other colts and geldings heat will see the return of unbeaten pacer My Ultimate Byron. There are also two heats for the two-year-old fillies.

The iForm team have put together the best bets for today’s NSW meetings:

Menangle best bet

Race 8: King Corey (3)

Resumes off the back of two good trials, top driver is on and looks ready to fire.

Menangle next best

Race 10: Itz Major Rich (2)

Progressive type who gets another top draw and looks well placed.

Around the tracks

Wagga best bet

Race 9: Illawong Barmah (6)

Talented trotter who lost his way late last year but anything like his best will be good enough here.

Play the exotics

The Menangle quaddie

Race 5: 6,1,7

Race 6: 2,1,8,5

Race 7: 1,8,6,7

Race 8: 3
