Trainer-driver Brad Hewitt has had a big week around the Breeders Challenge and will race at his home track of Goulburn today.

LIKE many of the top trainers throughout the state, Goulburn horseman Brad Hewitt has turned his focus on this year’s New South Wales Breeders Challenge Series, which is now in full swing.

The past week has seen many top performances in qualifying heats and Hewitt’s involvement has been bolstered with the addition of eligible youngsters from the Russell Jack stable after taking on the role as caretaker trainer.

Last Tuesday at Young, Brad took out a heat for the two-year-old fillies aboard the talented Captains Queen, who rated an impressive 1.56.4 on her way to an eight-metre victory.

The daughter of Captaintreacherous and out of the former top racemare, Fususi took her tally to six wins from seven starts, her only defeat coming at the hands of stablemate, Just Hope in the Bathurst Gold Tiara Final.

On Tuesday night, Captains Queen led and was never headed and now progresses to the semi-finals.

“She is a real little professional,” said Hewitt.

“She was impressive and really only did what she had to.

“She will definitely improve further going through to the finals.”

This afternoon, at his home track, Hewitt has two of his own horses having their final hit-outs before they contest the series.

“I am happy with two of mine that I am racing today at Goulburn which are Breeders Challenge bound,” he said.

“Hez Dusty is a big raw three-year-old gelding who has not quite learned what racing is all about yet.

“I am just waiting for the for the penny to drop with him as when it does, I believe he will develop into a really nice horse.

“I do expect him to win this afternoon and if all goes well from there, we will head down to Wagga for the three-year-olds’ heat next month.

“I have Arma Rolling Stone engaged as well today and he is very much like Dusty.

“He is getting better with work and time and will also head to Wagga for the two-year-olds’ division.

“There are a couple of nice ones drawn to his inside so we will come out of the gate and see what happens early on and then go from there.”

Hewitt’s stable star, Send It, will clash with Ignatius and Rockin Marty in the last race today in a small, but intriguing field.
