Now if you’re a Collingwood AFL fan don’t get over excited as Nick won’t be there, but there is a yearling, Lot 138, that has the paddock or stable name of ‘Daicos’ (for good reason) that is being presented for sale at Oaklands Junction on February 15.
The breeder of both Lots 138 and 147, John Coffey, has been breeding and selling good horses at yearling sales around Australia for the past 45 to 50 years.
Both are Ride High colts and both are the first colt produced by their dams.
John has been a very good friend of Peter Gleeson, the joint owner and breeder of Ride High, for many years. Both were employed by Dalgety Bloodstock, the major Sales Company of both codes of horses in the three southern Australian States during the 1980’s and ’90’s.
So where did the stable name of Daicos come from for the colt from Right Of Passage?
“I’m not a Collingwood fan but in respect to Peter who is, I have given the three Ride High colts I have bred to date the stable names of ‘Brodie’ (Grundy), ‘Darcy’ (Moore) and ‘Daicos’ (Nick),” answered Coffey recently.
“This colt from Right Of Passage was quite unbelievable, that from the very young age of just three or four days all he wanted to do apart from sleep, was to run and kept his mother tired in chasing him. It is rare to see such behaviour in young foals, so ‘Daicos’ was the logical name for him as there isn’t an AFL player today who runs and covers as much ground in a game as Nick Daicos.
As mentioned above, Lot 138 is the first colt of the American Ideal mare Right Of Passage, whose first three foals (all fillies) have all made it to the racetrack.
Lady Zegna, the first foal, only had 19 starts due to a tendon injury but showed above average ability with six wins and five placings in those few starts.
Lot 147, the second of the Ride High lads, is a tall, strong and athletically built colt. His grand-dam is a daughter of the wonderful race and broodmare Uncork.
So this colt is quite closely related to the champion two-year-old of last season in Loucasso and descends from a family made famous in South Australia through the deeds of Come On Frank, Bag Limit, Armchair Ride, etc.
Ride High, the sire of these two colts, won 16 of his 18 career starts and was a horse who possessed “bullet like” speed. In nine of those 16 wins he produced sub 26.8 last quarters – in seven of those 16 wins he ran sub 54 last halves including a 52.7 last half at Melton on a cold winter’s night in June 2020.
He has commenced his siring career in a blaze of glory siring Group winning fillies Ride The Highs (reared on the same property as Lots 138 and 147) and Delizioso and the exciting colts Moonlight Moth and Blazing High.
These two colts are among just 36 pacing colts in the Melbourne Sale that are eligible for the APG 2YO Victorian $100,000 Final in 2027. Monique Burnett will be delighted to show you them.
