SA Trots - A nice win before contemplating retirement for Hammers Law

WITH retirement pending, veteran trotter Hammers Law may have registered his final victory Monday.

Breaking a 13-month drought from the winners' circle by proving too good at Globe Derby, Hammers Law "doesn't have many more starts in him" according to trainer Shaun Adams.

Though he hopes the 11-year-old can manage another triumph, Adams is aware Hammers Law is "missing a step" compared to his prime.

As such, Hammers Law is likely to be retired in a matter of weeks.

"I was very pleased with him and happy to have him back on the winning list," Adams said. "He's been working well and his lead up runs have been good, it was just a matter of him getting the right run.

"There is another race for him at Globe Derby in a couple of weeks, but he is nearly ready for retirement.

"He is completely sound but I'm just feeling he has done his job and it is almost time to let him enjoy his senior years.

"The Cup in April would be a good swansong, but I'm not too fussed if he doesn't make it that long."

With Samantha Hill in the cart, Hammers Law led throughout the standing start to score by six metres from Hanover Da Moon.

Regal Attire, a stablemate of the runner-up, was two-and-a-half metres away third.

"I was as confident as you can be with a trotter in a standing start as he normally does things right, which I thought he would do again," Adams said.

"He had to have an ounce of luck and he was able to find the front, which was his luck and made the difference."
