Racing WA introduce new field selection approach for premier harness races

Following an internal review and consultation, Racing WA is introducing a new and comprehensive ranking system to determine contenders for prestigious harness racing events.

Rankings will now be determined based on a set of criteria, considering performances in a list of races, including preludes in some instances. These rankings will be regularly updated in the lead-up to each race, ensuring participants have real-time information about their horse's standing.

The six premier races that will be affected by the new ranking system, includes:

  • G1 $300,000 Retravision Fremantle Cup on 26 April 2024

  • G1 $150,000 The Trots WA Oaks on 4 October 2024

  • G1 $200,000 Sky Racing WA Derby on 1 November 2024

  • G1 $450,000 TABtouch WA Pacing Cup on 8 November 2024

  • G1 $150,000 Westral Mares Classic on 22 November 2024

  • G1 $200,000 Retravision 4YO Golden Nugget on 13 December 2024

Racing WA Head of Harness Racing & Special Projects, Cameron Brown said the new ranking system aims to provide enhanced visibility in the selection process.

“This new approach will empower connections, including owners and trainers, in selecting the fields and giving their horse the best chance possible of attaining a start,” Cameron said.

“Importantly, it will also contribute to the overall excitement and promotion of these high-profile racing events.”

The Retravision Fremantle Cup, scheduled for 26 April 2024 will be the first race to adopt this new field selection process with the initial rankings set to be released on 8 March.
